City Council Makes Progress on Budget
The Galesburg City Council met Wednesday night to go over the operations budget.

City Manager Todd Thompson had a list of items prepared for aldermen to cut more than $700,000 from the budget.

Aldermen agreed to cuts in vehicle replacement, property maintenance, and reduced funding to several funds.

The council did, however, leave in funding for internal roads, and several positions in the fire and street departments.

First Ward Alderman Ken Goad says people who have money forget that people without money can't afford taxes.

"We need to be more prudent and cut and not to spend money and add things in by adding additional taxes. So if this comes Monday night I can guarantee you I will be voting no on our budget."

The council agreed to a 2% increase in the gas use tax, creating a budget surplus of more than $100,000.

Increased revenue from video gambling in Galesburg was kept - though aldermen weren't necessarily convinced by the conservative revenue estimate of the City Management.

Aldermen will vote on the fiscal year 2013 budget at Monday night's City Council meeting.

As a safety net, the council agreed to keep a budget work session scheduled for Tuesday in the instance the budget doesn't pass.
