Library Budget Mistake May Be Corrected
The Galesburg Public Library may receive their full funding request after all.

The Library Board of Trustees had recently proposed cutting 5,384 dollars from their budget after the City Council couldn't pass an amendment to their budget proposal.

The amendment was requested by City Management and Fourth Ward Alderman Corine Anderson after a budget estimate of 20-thousand dollars wasn't changed to the requested 25,384 dollars.

The library planned to cut funding from new books, capital improvements, and part-time workers budgets.

Library Trustees Chair Martin Reichel tells WGIL they wouldn't have even made the cuts until January.

"It would've hurt us a little bit but not a tremendous amount because we did get an increase in our budget over last year and we were pleased with that," says Reichel. "The fact that they took the five thousand out inadvertently or whatever the case may be was not going to hurt us very badly, we found some places that we could cut, not that we wanted to, but we could."

Reichel went on to say the library will need to keep a closer eye on future budgets.

Aldermen voted 4-3 last night to take revenue generated from a two percent increase in the gas use tax and use that to make up the difference to the library.

The funding won't be official, however, until the City Council passes the fiscal year 2013 budget at Monday night's City Council meeting.
