Stop Means Stop Near New Overpass
There's one thing that the City of Galesburg makes sure you do now that you're likely enjoying traveling over the West Main Street Overpass: stop.

City Engineer Wayne Carl says a new sign has gone up at what's also known as the "Don Moffitt Overpass" -- it says, "Be Prepared to Stop."

Carl tells the WGIL Morning News the sign was put up in connection with the new traffic lights that have gone up in the area of the overpass near Main and Academy Streets.

"We've looked at an early on design that it maybe something we want to add, and we were going to add it in the future but based on you know the back up of cars sometimes on Main Street we thought it be better to be proactive and go ahead and install the sign as part of the job."

Carl says the sign will become critical if precipitation ever starts to freeze on the overpass.

He says there is plenty of distance for stopping, but if cars are backed up pretty far, rear-end collisions could end up being a possibility.
