Free Cab Rides For New Years Partiers
If you think you might have a bit too much celebrating to do tonight for New Years Eve, some local businesses are providing an important way to make sure you're safe.

The "Alert Cab" program is sponsored on a national level by Anheuser-Busch, which means the Galesburg's G-and-M distributors will be involved locally, providing free cab rides home tonight between 11 p-m and 3 a-m for anyone going to Galesburg drinking establishments.

G-and-M General Manager Adam Vitale tells the WGIL Morning News it's an initiative his late father felt strongly about.

"My father and Dennis Twitty started this program around twenty years ago now, and it's been successful every year since and it's kind of one of those things that's slowly grown," says Vitale. "Last year we provided 139 rides home."

Vitale says participating bars and restaurants will have a specific number that can be called to request a free ride home, within Galesburg city limits only.

He says rides may be available, too, for those looking to go to house parties as well.

Statistics indicate that nationally, drunk driving fatalities have falled to their lowest levels since record-keeping began 30 years ago.
