Trees In Knox County Plagued With Pest
The Department of Agriculture has confirmed the Emerald Ash Borer has been found on ash trees on the Knox College Campus.

During some late season pruning groundskeepers noticed damage on some of the trimmed branches.

A sample was sent for testing at the University of Illinois' Plant Clinic who passed the information onto Scott Shirmer from the Department if Agriculture.

Shirmer and Colleagues came out to Knox to exam the trees and send samples to the U-S-D-A for conformation.

Shirmer tells WGIL once they saw sings of the beetle the Department of Agriculture along with the City started putting a plan into action on how to combated the problem.

"We've been working with the City and Village arborists to develop a management plan and management strategy hopefully go forward with this," says Shirmer. "It's a long term management plan, it's not going to be taken care of in a day or two or even a year, people need to realize that this is going to be a 10 year process."

Shirmer says Knox County joins the long list of quarantined counties who have trees infested with the E-A-B.

That means none of the infested trees can be broken down into other material and taken to other counties not on quarantined list.

The hope is to keep those counties E-A-B free and reduce the risk of contamination.

Cases of E-A-B have also been confirmed in Henry County.
