|Gus Roy Monzo, age 87, of Galesburg, Illinois, passed away Wednesday, April 24, 2013 at 10:14 AM at OSF St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg, Illinois.
Gus was born on April 11, 1926 in Galesburg, Illinois, the son of Gus and Alvira Monzo. He married Fayrene Woods on December 4, 1956 in Galesburg, Illinois. She survives him of Galesburg.
Also surviving are his two sons; Leonard (Paula) Monzo of Galesburg, Roy Monzo of Galesburg, five grandchildren; Lydia Huse, Jake Monzo, Jess Monzo, Toby Monzo, Jennifer Parkin, 4 great-grandchildren; Caleb, Selah, Lauren, Dexter, and one sister; Francis Deford of Galesburg, Illinois.
He is preceded in death by his parents; Gus and Alvira, and a brother Joe Monzo.
Gus proudly served his country in Korea as a member of The United States Army. He received numerous medal and awards including: a Purple Heart, Korean Service Medal with 3 Bronze Service Stars, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, and the Expert Badge with Rifle Bar. He was later a member of the Galesburg American Legion.
He enjoyed collecting and caring for his many Ford Mustangs, yard working, and vacationing in Branson, Missouri.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, May 4, 2013 at 12:00 PM at the Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Home in Knoxville, Illinois. Memorial donations may be left to the Galesburg American Legion. Online condolences can be made at www.hurd-hendricksfuneralhome.com
