|Herschel L. "Firp" James, age 100, who lived most of his life in Abingdon, died at 10:40 pm Wednesday, June 26, 2013 at the Rosewood Care Center in Galesburg, where he resided the past six years.
He was born on November 12, 1912 in New Albany, Indiana, the son of Dudley and Maude (Bowen) James. He married Susie T. Hammond on October 11, 1944 in Kansas City, Kansas. She preceded him in death on May 19, 1993. He was also preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and one sister.
Firp is survived by one son, Dennis (and Angela) James of Galesburg; one grandson, Kyle James of Galesburg; and nieces and nephews and their families.
He was an Army veteran of WWII and served in the New Guinea Campaign. He was a member of the Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post #381 in Abingdon.
He worked at Gale Products in Galesburg for 32 years, retiring in 1975. His hobbies included bowling, golfing, and watching St. Louis Cardinal Baseball.
Graveside service with military rites will be held at 11:30 am Saturday, June 29, 2013 at the Abingdon Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:00 am to 11:00 am Saturday at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel.
