|Norma Gene Michael passed away on Monday, October 7, 2013 at Galesburg Cottage Hospital in Galesburg, Illinois.
She was born in Lucerne, Missouri on March 23, 1926 to James Henry and Pearl Easter Fields. She married Howard Valentine, then later married William Lewis Michael on April 12, 1949. He was the love of her life and together raised three daughters, Karen (George) Sutor, Galesburg, IL, Sandra (Hayward) Hough, Citrus Springs, FL, Theresa (Phillip) Swanson, Galesburg, IL. She was the very proud grandmother of seven grandchildren, Elizabeth (Dan) Wik, Michelle (Patrick) Horaney, Susan (Edward) Stellmacher, Erin (Andrew Webster) DeWitt, Rebecca (Rurik) Wood, William Wieland, and Jason (Jennifer) Swanson. She has eleven great-grandchildren. She has a sister Edna Payne and several nieces and nephews.
Norma retired from OMC and enjoyed travel and winters in Arizona. As an athletic woman, who was a Missouri all-state basketball guard in her youth, she decided to learn how to play golf in her retirement and had many years of enjoyment playing with her husband and friends.
While golf was a new activity, ballroom dancing was her favorite thing to do all her adult life. When in the arms of her partner for life, Bill, they were a joy to watch.
Whether it was dancing, playing cards, traveling by car or cruise ship, playing penny slots, or shopping with her family (the grandkids accused her of taking inventory on these outings) she had more fun and enjoyment just being with her friends and family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, and three brothers.
Private graveside services will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Homes & Crematory in Knoxville is assisting the family with arrangements. On-line condolences and sympathy cards may be sent through www.hurd-hendricksfuneralhomes.com
