|George H. Reiber, Jr., age 86, of Galesburg, Illinois died at 10:20 A.M. on Monday, December 3, 2012 at his residence in Galesburg, Illinois.
He was born on June 28, 1926 in Peoria, Illinois the son of George H. and Vida V. Carmichael Reiber, Sr. He married Barbara Ann Leng on January 6, 1952 at the First Methodist Church in Galesburg, Illinois.
Surviving are his children: Marty L. (Pam) Reiber of Oneida, Illinois; Jim Reiber of Galesburg, Illinois; Terry (Larry) Cross of Henderson, Illinois; Cindy (Bruce) Quarterman of Galesburg, Illinois; and Gary Reiber of St. Cloud, Florida. Six Grandchildren: Craig (Stephanie) Reiber; Christy Reiber; Cody Reiber; and Elyse Quarterman; Caitlin (Philly) Baughman; and Branden Reiber. Three Great Grandchildren: Graham Reiber, Braxten Chaney, and Kohyn Baughman. Also surviving are two sisters: Virginia Ann Caulkins of Alpha, Illinois, and Louise M. Aldus of Sherwood, Oregon. He was preceded in death by only his parents.
He served in the United States Navy from November 10, 1944 to June 20, 1946. He served on the USS Kalinin Bay and the USS Hoggatt Bay during World War II. He received the Victory Medal, Letter of Commendation, American Area Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal (4 stars) and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon (1 star). He received his GED in the Navy.
He worked as a carpenter in the Navy, then construction and Millwright in the Galesburg area.
He owned and operated George's Antiques and Classics in Galesburg in the 1970's. He enjoyed fishing and NASCAR.
As per his request cremation rites will be accorded and a Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date. In-lieu of flowers, Memorials may be made to the Family and sent to the Family or Funeral Home. Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Homes & Crematory in Knoxville is in charge of arrangements.
