Edward "Gene" Thomas, 83, of Smithshire, passed away at 6:34 AM Thursday January 21, 2010 at his residence.
He was born October 5, 1926 in Smithshire, Illinois to George B. and Cleo Ross Thomas; he married Marjorie L. Casteel on June 7, 1948 in Smithshire, IL. She survives.
Also surviving are 2 daughters; Connie (Steve) Davis, Barb (Gene) Simmons both of Smithshire; 2 sons; Charles “Mooch” (Janet) Thomas, Jeff (Cathy Betar) both of Monmouth, Illinois; 1 son-in-law Tim Raymond of Roseville, Illinois; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters; Opal Stacker and Sue Dean both of Cameron, Illinois He was preceded in death by his parents; 1 daughter, Jackie Raymond; 2 grandchildren, 2 sisters and 4 brothers.
He was born and raised in Smithshire where he lived his entire life. He served in the US Navy in the Pacific Theater from 1944-1946.
He worked for Twomey Company for over 50 years.
He was a member of the Smithshire Methodist Church, he was Ellison Twp. Clerk for 30 years; served on the Ellison Township Cemetery Board; served on the Smithshire Fire Dept, was Chairman of the Illinois Fertilizer and Chemical Association for a year and a half; and was made a lifetime honorary member . He was also a member of the Lawson Babitt American Legion Post 614. Member of USSLST Association
Services will be 2:00 PM Monday January 25, 2010 at the Corman Memorial Home in Roseville, where visitation will be Sunday from 2-4 PM. Burial will be in Ellison Cemetery, Smithshire Il with military rites by his Legion Post.
