Swanson, Dale E.
Dale E. Swanson, 92, of Galesburg and formerly of Abingdon, died at 5:20 am Saturday, January 23, 2010 at his home.

He was born on November 11, 1917 in Cedar Township, Knox County, IL to Ernest A. and Ella (Pierson) Swanson. He married Vivian Stokoe in February of 1942 in Altona. She preceded him in death in 1983. He was also preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Marjorie Swanson, Doris Graham and Ruth Johnson, and a son-in-law, Fred Friedrich.

Dale is survived by three sons, Eric (and Sharen) Swanson of London Mills, Alan (and Barbara) Swanson of Normal and Steve (and Beth) Swanson of Monmouth; two daughters, Linda (and Richard) Hollenberg of Kirkwood and Patricia Friedrich of Sarasota, FL; 7 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren; and his dear companion, Margaret Kilpatrick of Galesburg.

He graduated from Altona High School in 1935. He then attended Knox College and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1939. Dale was a member of the ROTC at Knox College. He served in the Army from 1942 until 1946 during WW II in the south Pacific at the 85th Fighter Wing Headquarters as the Chemical Officer Major.

Dale was a farmer and farmed for over 50 years retiring in 1993.

He was a member of the Knox County Genealogical Society, OAKS in Galesburg, the Illinois Valley Fox Hunters Association, the Galesburg Rifle Club, National Rifle Association, and Warren County Farm Bureau. He also served as a volunteer for the Sky Watch CB Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and mentoring (advising) his friends and family. He was a very loving father and grandfather.

As Dale had requested, cremation will be accorded. Private burial of his ashes will be in the Abingdon Cemetery. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements. Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.
