Henig, Winona Varner
Mrs. Winona (Nonie) Varner Henig, 88, of Galesburg passed away at her home on Sunday afternoon, January 9, 2011.

She is survived by loving son, John (and Tammy) Rosenberg of Galesburg and daughter, Judy (and Lou) Rosenberg Prevost of Spring Hill, Fla., as well as three brothers and a sister: Raymond R. Varner of Rhinelander, Wis., W.D. Varner of Cincinnati, Ohio, James M Varner of Brooksville, Fla. and Dorothy (and Ramon) Hershman of San Diego, Calif.; two grandsons and two granddaughters.

She was first married to Charles W. Rosenberg and later to A.J. Henig. Both preceded her in death. She had been employed in her early life by the Scandia Restaurant and O. T. Johnson and Company, and later maintained a position as dispatcher for two major trucking firms here in Galesburg.

Nonie loved traveling and enjoyed reading and studying about distant places, and had almost total recall of geographical locations. When she was able, she traveled frequently throughout the United States. She was very well read and had an extensive and eclectic library which ranged from Shakespeare and the Classics to modern political commentary, but her favorite author was Mark Twain. She was a talented writer and clothing designer, and at one time ran her own dressmaker's shop. In the 1950's, she began to research the genealogy of her family, collecting stories and information which were later compiled and published in a family history book. A person of strong opinions and ready wit, she will long be remembered as an independent thinker and student of history.

Visitation will be 9 a.m. on Friday, January 14, at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel, 1070 West Fremont Street, followed by a funeral service at 10 a.m. Rev. James Ecklund will preside. Burial will be in East Linwood Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family. Online condolences may be left at www.h-p-w.com.
