Graflund, Richard
Richard "Duke" Graflund, 82, a resident of the Marigold Rehab and Health Care Center in Galesburg and formerly of RR Galesburg and Abingdon, passed away on Thursday, January 27, 2011 at 5:44 am at the Marigold.

Duke was born February 10, 1928 in Galesburg to Paul and Marie (Peterson) Graflund. He lived with his parents and his wonderful Aunt Ruby and Uncle Raymond Graflund and they all have preceded him in death.

He graduated from Galesburg High School in 1947. He then enlisted in the Army in November of 1950 and served in the Korean War until August of 1952. He was awarded a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star with Valor. He worked for OMC/Gale Products in Galesburg for 36 years and later at the Rock Island Arsenal for over 7 years and retired from both places. He then worked part-time at M & W Quality Tool & Die in Galesburg.

He married Mary Lou Barrs and later married Dorothy Joan Clark.

Surviving Duke are two daughters, Renee and Scott Maxwell (grandchildren Britny, Morgan and Tresten) all of Abingdon, Poeschell Curtis and Greg Levandowski (grandchildren Brad Graflund, Jessica Teel, Tyler Henry, Greg and Kelsey Levandowski) all of Galesburg, (grandchildren Tom Pflasterer and fiancé, Regan and Ryan Pflasterer of Lomax); 5 great-grandchildren; and his special cousin, David Graflund of Galesburg.

He was an artist at heart, dabbling in oil paints, doing pastel portraits, and sketching in his spare time. He enjoyed watching movies and playing cards. Dukes friends knew him as an outgoing, energetic and adventurous person. He loved to watch and feed the squirrels and birds. He was a kind, loving, and giving father and grandfather. His memory will live inside of us forever.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm Sunday, January 30, 2011 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel. Cremation will be accorded following the visitation.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or the Galesburg Rescue Mission. Online condolences may be expressed at www.h-p-w.com.
