Hobbs, Roy A.
Roy A. "Buster" Hobbs, 81, of Galesburg died at 4:10 am Thursday, January 12, 2012 at his winter home in Mission, Texas.

He was born October 19, 1930 in Harvey, Ill the son of Fred and Ruybe Thompson. He married Alleyene Johnson on January 9, 1953. He later married Mary Sturgeon on August 1, 1978. She preceded him in death.

He is survived by his son, Jeffrey A. Hobbs; his daughter, Jana L. Gerlitz of Longmont, Colo.; two step sons, R. Michael (Elaine) Sturgeon and David L. (Rhonda) Sturgeon both of Galesburg; one grandson Robert P. Gerlitz; four step grandchildren, Joshua and Kyle Sturgeon and Tamara Diefendorf Villarreal and Sam Diefendorf; six step great grandchildren, Kolton, Logan and Madison Sturgeon; Danielle Diaz and Chad Miller and Lilly Diefendorf. He is preceded in death by his wife, parents, a brother Norman Hobbs, two sisters, Nadine Hall and Geraldine Palmer.

Buster graduated from Knoxville High School in 1948. In 1951 he joined the US Navy, serving during the Korean War until 1955. He was an AD3 on board the Aircraft Carrier U.S.S. Hornet CVA12. He was a member of the Galesburg Elks Lodge Post #894 and Knoxville American Legion Post #749. He worked for Admiral/Maytag Corporation for 30 years, retiring in 1985.

He and his wife Mary enjoyed camping, fishing and traveling in his motor home throughout the United States. Buster was an avid sports fan of St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago Bears. He also was a great supporter of the Galesburg American Legion Post #285 baseball team for many years.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 am Friday, January 20, 2012 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel with Military Rites by Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285. Rev. Milton Marquith will officiate. Visitation will be 5:00-7:00 pm Thursday at the chapel. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
