Batson, Joseph A.
Joseph A. "Art" Batson, age 84 of Abingdon, died at 10:00 pm Sunday, January 15, 2012 at home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on February 26, 1927 in Trenton, Missouri, the son of Charles and Dora (McCullough) Batson. He married Dutch Abbott on June 26, 1948 in Galesburg.

Art is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Dutch; his children, Larry (and Evaleen) Batson, Danny (and Mary) Batson, Holly (and Bob) Plasters, Steve (and Kelly) Batson and Bonnie (and John) Mason all of Abingdon; ten grandchildren, Penny(and Rich) Ralston-Berg,) Jeff (and Teal) Batson, Kevin Batson, Danielle Hall, Tony (and Michelle) Batson, Cassandra Sullivan, Caleb Batson, Holly Mason, Karly Batson, and Johnathon Mason; five great-grandchildren Mason Batson, Kylee Batson, Drake Hall, Derrick Sullivan and Mattison Sullivan; three step-grandchildren Kena (Larry) Erwin, Brad Glisan, Brian (Linda) Glisan and six step-great-grandchildren Madyson Glisan, Zach Glisan, Lindsay Erwin, Kacie Erwin, Tyres Glisan, Jordan Glisan; one adopted grandchild, Ashley Graves; five brothers, Harry, Ronnie and Chuck all of Abingdon, Bob of Oquawka and Kenny of Little Swan Lake, Avon; four sisters, Betty Gordon, Shirley Blodgett and Mary Jo Russo all of Abingdon and Patsy Lambert of Fayetteville, Arkansas; and several nieces and nephews and their families.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one step-grandson, Scott Glisan.
Art lived in Abingdon most of his life. He served in the Army during WW II. He worked at the Abingdon Brass Factory, Dechows Ford Garage and later worked at Briggs Manufacturing for 43 years, retiring on January 11, 1991. He also did home mechanic repair and was a part-time police officer for the city of Abingdon. He was of Christian faith. He was a past member of the Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post #381 and a past member of the Galesburg Rifle Club. He loved to fix things. He lived for his kids, grandkids and great-grandkids.

Graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm Thursday, January 19, 2012 at the Abingdon Cemetery. Mrs. Eleanor Landon will officiate. Visitation will be from 1:00 pm to 1:45 pm Thursday at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel.
