|Jimmie M. McElrea, age 67 of Lake Bracken, died at 12:55 pm Wednesday, January 2, 2013 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
He was born on July 1, 1945 in Galesburg, the son of James "Buzzy" and C. Genevieve (Houser) McElrea. He married Joann Way in 1966 in Abingdon.
Jim is survived by his loving wife, Joann; three sons, Sean (and Jacqueline) McElrea of Carlyle, Shane McElrea of Lake Bracken and Joshua (and Carrie) McElrea of Galesburg; seven grandchildren, Elizabeth, Lisa, Chelly, Samantha, Megan, Andrew and Paige; ten great-grandchildren, Parker, Peyton, Wyatt, Aidan, Connor, Hannah, Ryleigh, Easton, Brieanna and Mila; two special sons, Rod McNeely and Denver Galloway; his mother-in-law, Elizabeth Way; his sisters-in-law, Joyce (and Gerald) Pica and Jeannie (and Mark) McCurry; several nieces and nephews; and his very special companion, his dog, Snickel.
He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother, James McElrea, a sister, Sherry McNeely, and a brother-in-law, John McNeely.
He graduated from Abingdon High School in 1963. He worked as a union carpenter with Local 183 Carpenters Union in East Peoria, retiring in 2002. He then did AutoCAD for Du-Mont and Rothan Companies in Peoria. He had lived at Lake Bracken the past 16 years and prior to that in Avon. He and Joann also wintered in Texas.
Jim was baptized at the Abingdon Christian Church. He was a former scoutmaster. His hobbies included bowling, fishing, hunting, trapping, golfing, camping, RV-ing, playing pool and poker, kayaking, bird watching, wood carving, shooting guns and bow and arrows. His greatest times were spent in laughter with family and friends.
As Jim had requested, cremation will be accorded. The family will receive friends from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm Saturday, January 5, 2013 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel followed by a celebration of life service.
