|Harry E. Hopping, Sr., 82, of East Galesburg died at 12:43 p.m. Saturday February 13, 2010 in OSF St. Francis Medical Center.
He was born February 18, 1927 in Abingdon the son of Ralph Y. and Bertha Morris Hopping, Sr. He married Donna May Watson on December 12, 1943 in Kahoka, Mo. She preceded him in death on December 31, 1992.
He is survived by three sons, Harry E. (Susan) Hopping Jr. of Galesburg, Samuel D. (Patricia) Hopping of East Galesburg, and Keith D. (Debbie) Hopping of Hickman, Neb.; a daughter-in-law, Melinda Clayton Hopping of New Mexico; one brother, David (Lou) Hopping of Galesburg; 20 grandchildren; 41 great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, James R. and LeRoy A. Hopping, five brothers, a daughter-in-law, Christine Hopping and one granddaughter.
He served in the Army during World War II and was a Purple Heart recipient.
Harry worked as a truck driver for the former Maytag Corporation for 30 years, retiring in 1986. He was a member of the Alpha Masonic Lodge #155 and the Royal Arch Masons #46. He also was a Galesburg Commandry #8 Knight Templer and a member of the Galesburg Order of the Eastern Star. Harry was a member of the Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285 and the Elks Lodge #894.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Thursday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. The Rev. Milton Marquith will officiate. Visitation will be from 5:00-6:45 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel with Masonic services by the Alpha Masonic Lodge #155 at 6:45 p.m. Burial will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens with Military Rites by Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285.
