|William L. "Bill" Bowden, 91, of Galesburg, Ill. died at 4:35 a.m. Saturday, February 20, 2010 at Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
He was born on July 16, 1918 in Hermon, Ill. the son of Harry A. and Hattie Edith Smith Bowden. He married Ruth M. Bowman in Hermon on July 20, 1940. She preceded him in death on January 3, 1973. He then married Phyllis J. Brown in Galesburg on June 27, 1979. She preceded him in death on August 17, 1993.
He is survived by two daughters, Martha S. Hines of Alpha, Ill. and Barbara R. (and Alan) Knight of Orlando, Fla.; a step-son, Mark C. (and Pam) Brown of Galesburg; nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.
William lived in Hermon until moving to Galesburg in 1953. He worked in the maintenance department at Maytag for 32 years, retiring in 1983. After retirement from Maytag, he owned and operated 3-Way Cleaning Service in Galesburg until 2007. He was a 1938 graduate of Gilson (Ill.) High School and a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #3629 in Oquawka, Ill and Moose Lodge #880, Galesburg.
William liked fishing, hunting, and gardening. He was always a supportive father and grandfather.
Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 24, 2010 at Hinchliff Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel with Rev. Susan Greer officiating. Visitation will be from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel. He will be cremated following the services and then buried in East Linwood Cemetery in Galesburg at a later date.
