|W. H. "Bud" Purcell, Jr., 88, of Galesburg, died at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday, February 14, 2012 in Rosewood Care Center.
He was born September 20, 1923 in Hannibal, Mo., the son of W. H. and Pauline (Reynolds) Purcell Sr. He married Albert M. Yarkosky on October 14, 1951 in Ottumwa, Iowa. She preceded him in death on March 16, 2008.
He is survived by his son, Gary H. (and Charlene) Purcell of Metairie, La.; nephew, Howard (and Patricia) Stewart of Galesburg; good friend, Nancy Larson of Galesburg; and canine friends, Beau and Jack "The Boyz." He was also preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Jean Sapp.
Bud was an engineer for Burlington Northern Railroad for 44 years and 4 months. He graduated from Hannibal High School in 1941.
Bud served in the United States Army during World War II from 1943 to 1946. He was a member of Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285 and 40 & 8.
Bud enjoyed spending time with his friends, golfing at Bunker Links and at the American Legion.
Funeral will be 3 p.m. Friday, February 17, 2012 in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Rev. William Miller will officiate. Military rites will be provided by Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be 1:30 to 3 p.m. Friday at the chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to American Cancer Society, Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285, or Beacon of Hope Hospice. Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.
