|Muriel Laura James, age 95, a resident of the Rosewood Care Center in Galesburg and formerly of the Delong area, went to be with her Lord and Savior surrounded by her loving family at 5:00 am Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at the Rosewood Care Center.
She was born on December 12, 1916 in Orange Township, Knox County, the daughter of Abraham Lincoln "A.L." and Amy Belle (Brown) Hoofnagle. She married Raymond Earl James on April 1, 1939 in Kahoka, Missouri. He preceded her in death.
Muriel is survived by two sons, David (and Cathy) James of Galesburg and Robert James of Canton; two daughters, Sharon Mathews of Galesburg and Linda (and Brian) Davies of rural Maquon; seven grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, six sisters and her son-in-law, Geral Mathews.
She had lived in the Delong area most of her life. She had worked at the Blue Bell in Abingdon as a seamstress and later at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Knoxville as a nurse aide. She was a member of the Delong Ladies Aide Club. She was an avid gardner until her early 80's.
In her later years, she loved to travel with her son Robert, and they would take unannounced trips out west through California and Arizona and take in all the sites in between. She loved to share the stories and memories of their travels.
Cremation will be accorded. As Muriel requested, private graveside services will be held at the Haynes Cemetery near Delong at a future date and there will be no visitation. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
