Harler, Dr. A.J.
Dr. A.J. "Jack" Harler, 76, of Galesburg, died at 3:28 a.m. Saturday, February 25, 2012 in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.

He was born October 27, 1935 in Galesburg, the son of John M. and June L. McWilliams Harler. He married Beverly J. Rotz on June 10, 1956 in Maquon.

He is survived by his wife, Beverly, two daughters, Susan Lyn (and Bill) Hayes and Becky Jo (and Jim) Clark, both of Galesburg; a granddaughter, Lindsey Marie Hayes of Galesburg; two grandsons, Nathan A. (and Jessica) Townsend of Augusta, Ga. and John Henry Clark of Galesburg; a step great granddaughter, Payton; and a brother, Alan E. Harler of Philadelphia, Pa. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Jack was a podiatrist in Galesburg for 50 years, retiring in June of 2008. He graduated from Spoon River Valley High School in 1953, Western Illinois University, and the Illinois College of Podiatry and Foot Surgery.

"Doc" was a longtime, respected breeder of Shetland Sheepdogs, founding Jo-Lyn Kennels. He spent many years breeding, showing, and judging Shelties. In conjunction with the late Bob Self, he published Front & Finish, a training publication devoted to obedience enthusiasts.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, a 50 year member of Alpha Masonic Lodge #155, member and past president of Galesburg Kiwanis Club, board member and past president of Stone Hayes Center for Independent Living, and former member and past president of American Shetland Sheepdog Association.

Cremation will be accorded. Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, March 3, 2012 at First United Methodist Church. Rev. Melva England will officiate. The family will receive friends from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will follow the service at the Maquon Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family to establish a memorial fund at a later date. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Service is in charge of arrangements.
