Youngren, Wanda G.
Mrs. Wanda G. Youngren, 91, formerly of Galesburg, died early in the morning of Thursday, March 11, 2010, in Apostolic Christian Resthaven, Elgin, Illinois.

She was born Wanda Maxine Goode on April 17, 1918 in Galesburg, the daughter of Robert C. Goode and Nellie D. (Hoffman) Goode. She married Henry T. "Hap" Youngren of Galesburg on December 27, 1941 in Biloxi, Mississippi. He preceded her in death on June 30, 1988.

Wanda is survived by three sons, Thomas (Linda) Youngren of Huntley, Illinois, Douglas (Sandy) Youngren of Darien, Illinois and Steven (Peg) Youngren of Elgin, Illinois; five grandchildren, Leslie (Jay) Alter and Daniel (Angie) Youngren, Jonathan Youngren, and Stephanie and Peter Youngren; and four great-grandchildren, Will, Cate and Tommy Alter and Henry Youngren. In addition to her parents and husband, her brother, Louis L. Goode, preceded Wanda in death.

Wanda Youngren graduated from Galesburg High School in 1935 and Knox College in 1939. During World War II she and her husband lived on Army Air Corps bases in Mississippi, Texas and Florida before returning to Illinois. Except for a few years spent in Bloomington and Woodhull between 1946 and 1951, she was a lifelong resident of Galesburg, before relocating to Elgin in the late 1990s.

In the mid 1950's Wanda began a 30-year teaching career, first at the Knox College Kindergarten and then in Galesburg District 205, where she taught first grade at Bateman School for more than two decades. One of her great joys later in life was being remembered and thanked by former students whom she had started on their educational journeys.

Wanda was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Pi Beta Phi sorority and the Knox College Fifty-Year Club. After retiring from teaching, she served as a volunteer at Galesburg Cottage Hospital. Wanda's interests over the years included music, dance, art, shopping for clothes and watching late-night television. She loved dogs, but also allowed the occasional cat, hamster, rabbit, turtle, parakeet, petrified frog and stuffed hawk to inhabit her home. In their "empty nest" years, Wanda and her husband Hap attended dozens of antique shows and became avid collectors of vintage glassware, porcelain, etc. Wanda was especially fond of her antique doll collection.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 am Wednesday, March 17 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West, Galesburg Chapel. The Rev. Dr.Tom Larsen will officiate. Visitation will be Tuesday 5:00-8:00 pm at the chapel. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church in Galesburg, Apostolic Christian Resthaven in Elgin or Hospice of Northeastern Illinois in Barrington. Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.
