|Ray G. Johansen, 88, of 206 Olive St. Galesburg died at 6:14 AM Monday March 15, 2010 in Cottage Hospital.
He was born December 20, 1921 in Davenport, IA the son of George and Irene Cook Johansen. He married Verna Larson in Galesburg on June 23, 1957. She survives.
Also surviving is a son Scott (Catherine) Johansen of Aurora, IL; a daughter Renay (George) Slifka of Brookfield, IL; a brother Don (Louise) Johansen of Galesburg and two grandchildren Lindsay and Anne Johansen. He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister.
He served in the US Army from 1942-1945 during WWII stationed in the Caribbean as a Sgt. in the military police.
Ray worked at a Illinois Camera Shop for 9 years. He later owned and operated Ray's Hobby Shop for 32 years. He also worked for the Depot Hobby Shop for 9 years and Duff Hardware for 17 years. He graduated from Galesburg High School in 1940. He was a member of the Alpha Masonic Lodge #155. Ray was a member and very active in the Grace Anglican Church.
Ray loved the hobby industry and the joy it brings to all. More than anything he loved being with the public. He enjoyed the many friends and customers he worked with over the years.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 AM Friday March 19, 2010 at the Grace Anglican Church. The Rev. William Barnds and the Deacon Michael Henley will officiate. Visitation will be 5:00-7:00 PM Thursday March 18, 2010. Burial will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens.
