|Robert J. Elias, 93, 550 E. Carl Sandburg Drive, Galesburg, died at 3:15 a.m., Friday, March 26, 2010 in OSF St. Mary Medical Center.
He was born March 1, 1917 in Cuba, Ill., the son of William L. and Mary Donaldson Elias. He married Lois Eileen Wilk on June 13, 1937 in Galesburg.
He is survived by his wife, Eileen, a son, Robert W. (and Cathy) Elias of Durham, N.C., two daughters, Mary Jo (and Doug) Ruhl of Abingdon, Ill. and Sue Ann Elias of Bradley, Ill., eight grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and a great granddaughter.
Robert was a coal miner for United Electric/Freeman United Coal Company for 42 years, retiring in 1979. He was raised in Cuba before moving to Galesburg at the age of 12. He graduated from Galesburg High School in 1935. He then lived in Canton, Ill. for 61 years before returning to Galesburg in 1998.
He was a member of the Christian Church of Canton and attended the First Baptist Church in Galesburg. He was a member of the United Mine Workers of America Local #7110.
Funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Monday, March 29, 2010 in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Rev. Daniel Siems will officiate. Visitation will be 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Monday at the chapel. Cremation will be accorded after the service with burial in Linwood Cemetery at a later date.
