Swanson, Virginia "Ginny"
Mrs. Virginia "Ginny" P. Swanson, 85, of Galesburg died at 6:50 am Monday, March 7, 2011 in Cottage Hospital.

She was born June 27, 1925 in Galesburg the daughter of Lawrence W. and Ella Shanning Peterson. She married Samuel R. Swanson II in Galesburg on December 29, 1946. He preceded her in death on December 1, 2003.

She is survived by two sons Steven (Barbara) Swanson of Hinsdale, Ill and Samuel (Cindi) Swanson III of Dallas, Texas and a daughter Debbie (Robb) Svendsen of Hinsdale, Ill; seven grandchildren Robbie (Kimley) Svendsen, Amy (Tom) Waldron, Steven Maynard Swanson II, Michael Blair Swanson, Sarah Arends Swanson, Jessica Sloan Swanson, Samuel Robert Swanson IV, and six great grandchildren Tommy, Molly, and Nora Waldron, Layla, Alice, and Parker Svendsen.

Ginny was an elementary school teacher for District #205 for 20 years. After her retirement she continued her mentoring of young children and received so much joy as part of the Reading Buddy Program at Neilson School. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association both local and state. She served as a board member of the Alexis School Board, secretary of the Knox College Alumni Association, was a member of the Knox Gale Society and the Knox Fifty Year Club.

She was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority and a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Honorary Society for Teachers. Ginny was a member of the Cottage Service Guild Board and served as a board member for the Visiting Nurses Association. She also belonged to the Mosaic Club, was 55 year member of the PEO Chapter W, was a member of the Tri Delta Alumnae, member of the Soangetaha Country Club, and was a member of the Hard Knox II. She graduated from Galesburg High school in 1943 and Knox College in 1947. Ginny was a life long member of the Trinity Lutheran Church.

Ginnys children were so proud of the way their mother touched so many people from different age group from her reading buddies, to her childrens friends and of course to her own friends. Ginny was also very supportive and encouraging to al people she came in contact with. Failure was not in her vocabulary. She will be remembered for her compassion and her willingness to help others.

Ginny loved her family and would do anything for them. In addition to the love of her family she had a soft spot in her heart for sports activities and entertainment. She hardly ever missed a Cubs game on TV, was a huge fan of Arnold Palmer and became friends with country music singer Pat Green. A couple of her annual highlights was following the Galesburg All City Golf Tournament and making a few wagers in the Labor Day Golf Tournament.

A Memorial Service is scheduled for 12:30 pm Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church. Rev. Tom Larsen will officiate. Visitation will be 5:00-7:00 pm Thursday evening at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials to be made to the Trinity Lutheran Church, Knox College, or to the Charity of the Donors Choice. Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.
