|Marie and Leon Huffman met in San Francisco in the early 1940s while roller skating. You could say they bumped into each other. Leon's version of the events closed with him catching Marie as she crashed. She told it differently, with Leon the victim of clumsy footing.
In truth, the two caught each other.
Marie Huffman, loving wife, caring mother of four, adored grandmother of eight and great grandma of 14, cherished sister, beloved friend and beautiful soul, found peace on Monday, March 7. She was 83.
She will be forever loved and will be greatly missed.
Marie and her late husband Leon raised their family in a farmhouse outside Victoria where generations of their family gathered on special occasions. There was never a shortage of gifts or food for family--or guests.
Marie was an artist, painting china, sewing acres of quilts and cultivating a flower garden that bloomed in a kaleidoscope of colors outside her house. She was always a welcome face at her coffee group gatherings and never skipped a chance for a shopping trip to Chicago with her best friend Marilyn Rask.
Marie is survived by her sons Larry (Toni) and Jack (Sarah) Huffman and daughters Sylvia (Gary) Haynes and Barbara (Randy) Creglow; sister Iva Blackmon; brother Stan Kelton; and her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her parents were the late Theodore Hodge and Artelia Kelton, and she was preceded in death by husband Leon and twin sister Adelaide.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hurd Hendricks Funeral Home in Oneida. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Victoria, where Marie was an active member for decades. Memorials can be made out to the Prairieland Animal Welfare Center and the United Methodist Church in Victoria.
