|Jerry L. Smith, 64, of 1466 260th Ave., Galesburg, died at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 13, 2011 at home.
He was born June 22, 1946 in Galesburg, the son of Harold G. and Elsie Marie Clark Smith. He married Connie S. Burks on March 2, 1971 in Galesburg.
He is survived by his wife, a daughter, Amy Mathews of Galesburg, four grandchildren, Cheyenne Mathews, Alyssa Mathews, Nicole (and John) Roy, and Logan Mathews, six great grandchildren, three brothers, Harold L. (and Rosemary) Smith of the state of Virginia, Richard (and Carol) Smith and John Smith, both of Odessa, Texas, and three sisters, Zelda (and Bob) Booton of Boise, Idaho, Elsie Stanley of Galesburg, and Ruby (and Dino) Williamson of Carthage, Ill. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Jerry worked as a custodian at Knox College, Galesburg Cottage Hospital, and OSF St. Mary Medical Center. He attended Knoxville High School. He was of the Christian faith. Jerry enjoyed fishing and once caught a 10 pound catfish in his pond. He was also an avid collector of model trains and coins.
He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War with the 101st Airborne.
Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Friday, March 18, 2011 at Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens. Rev. Darrell Garrett will officiate and military rites will be provided by Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285. Visitation will be 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Memorials may be made to the family.
