|Gussie W. Cowan, 88, of RR Galesburg, died at 9:40 am Friday, March 25, 2011 at OSF St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg.
He was born on July 2, 1922 near a logging camp close to Venus, Arkansas, the son of James Edward and Ruth M. (Embry) Cowan. He married Violet E. Pearson on February 1, 1948 in Galesburg. She preceded him in death on August 7, 2006. He was also preceded in death by his parents and one son, Jim Cowan.
Gussie is survived by one son, Terry (and Marsha) Cowan of RR Abingdon; two daughters, Pam Cowan (and Michael Cook) of Galesburg and Linda (and Chuck) Pieper of RR Gilson; a daughter-in-law, Susan Cowan of RR Galesburg; ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
He served in the Marine Corps during WW II and was stationed in the South Pacific. He had lived in the Abingdon and Galesburg areas since 1949. He farmed all his life and also worked at Butler Manufacturing in Galesburg from 1951 to 1987. He enjoyed taking his family on fishing trips to Wisconsin in his earlier years.
Cremation will be accorded. Graveside service will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, April 2, 2011 at Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens in Galesburg. Mrs. Eleanor Landon will officiate. Military rites will be conducted by Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post #381. There will be no visitation. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
