|Harold D. "Bones" Witherell, age 87, of Galesburg and formerly of Abingdon, died at 8:08 pm Wednesday, March 7, 2012 at the Marigold Rehab and Health Care Center in Galesburg.
He was born on December 13, 1924 in Galesburg, the son of Forrest R. and Emma M. (Wilson) Witherell. He married Virginia L. Witten on July 3, 1948 in Coldbrook. She preceded him in death on June 18, 2011.
Harold is survived by three sons, Richard (and Julie) Witherell of Abingdon, Alan (and Shelley) Witherell of Ankeny, Iowa and Larry Witherell; one daughter, Celia (and Larry) Ottoson of Littleton, Colorado; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; one sister, Marie Bogard of Portland, Indiana.
He graduated from Galesburg High School in 1943. He was a Navy Veteran of WW II and the Korean War. He worked as a conductor for BNSF Railroad for 32 years retiring on December 1, 1984.
He was of the Methodist faith. He was a member of the Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post #381 in Abingdon and was a member of the Honor Guard Firing Squad. He was also a lifetime member of VFW #1422 in Bushnell. He was a 50 year member of the Abingdon Masonic Lodge #185 and was a 32nd degree Mason, and a member of the Shrine.
Masonic Rites and Funeral Service will be at 2:00 pm Sunday, March 11, 2012 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel. Burial will follow in the Abingdon Cemetery with military rites by American Legion Post #381. Visitation will be from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm Sunday at the chapel.
