Emert, Cornelia
Cornelia "Betty" Emert, age 90 of Abingdon, died at 11:40 am Tuesday, March 13, 2012 at the Care Center of Abingdon.

She was born on June 6, 1921 in Laura, Illinois the daughter of Glen O. and Virginia (Murdock) Doubet. She married Harry J. Emert, Jr. of Peoria, Illinois on January 31, 1942 in Laura. He preceded her in death on January 24, 2006.

Surviving is one son, Howard (and wife, Tina) Emert of Albany, Georgia; two grandchildren, Keri Phillips and Kevin Emert and two great-grandchildren, Kennedy and Emree Phillips all of Albany, Georgia.

Betty grew up in Laura and graduated from Brimfield High School. During those informative years, her father served as Peoria County Deputy Sheriff and her mother was in the middle of a 60 year career teaching in the Brimfield School system before her retirement.

After high school, Betty went to work for Carr & Johnson Manufacturing in Peoria, Illinois, where she met and married Harry. She subsequently spent three and one-half years in New London, Connecticut supporting her husband in the United States Coast Guard.

After WW II, she moved to St. Augustine, Illinois to take up with her husband in farming and working in the postal service. She served as Postmaster of the St. Augustine Post Office from 1970 to 1976, at which time she retired. In 1979 they moved to Abingdon where she has since resided.

As a boating enthusiast, she served in numerous positions in the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary in Burlington, Iowa from 1976 to 1996.

She was of the Episcopal faith.

Cremation will be accorded. The family will receive friends from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm Friday, March 16, 2012 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel followed by a prayer service at 5:00 pm led by Rev. Darryl McDaniel.
