Courtney, Helen J.
Helen J. Courtney, 96, of Galesburg, died at 12:26 p.m. Friday, March 23, 2012 in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.

She was born August 7, 1915 in Jackson, Iowa the daughter of Arthur and Martha Perdue Wiley. She married LaVerne H. Courtney on December 30, 1933 in Ottumwa, Iowa. He preceded her in death on November 24, 1989.

She is survived by two sons, Richard D. Courtney of Galesburg and Timothy W. (and Mary) Courtney of Rio, Ill.; six grandchildren, Rich Courtney, Scott (and Barbara) Courtney, Beth Anne (and Paul) Kostka, Aaron (and Deanna) Courtney, Alex (and Natasha) Courtney, and Abram Courtney; 10 great grandchildren, Zachary, Kaitlyn, and Jessica Courtney, Natalie and Rozalynn Courtney, Courtney, Caitlin, and Chloe Kostka, and Shannon and Paris Courtney; two great-great grandchildren; a sister, Geraldine Daniel of Dallas, Texas; and a sister-in-law, Katherine Wiley of Seal Beach, Calif. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Clayton, Don, and Ron Wiley; and a sister, Bernice Losey.

Helen was a homemaker and mother. She had worked as a teacher for 10 years for the Society of Crippled Children and Adults and at Sudsys Laundromat for a time. In her late 70s, she began working as an elderly assistant, sitting with people in their homes or in the hospital. She retired from sitting at the age of 85.

Helen was raised and educated in Burlington, Iowa, attending Burlington High School. She lived in Burlington until moving to Galesburg in 1953. She was a member of Calvary Assembly of God Church in Galesburg. Helen was a tireless volunteer all of her life with many organizations, including being a den mother for the Cub Scouts in Iowa and Illinois, volunteering with the American Red Cross and was a blood donor, and volunteering at the Galesburg Research Hospital.

For years, Helen enjoyed fishing and camping with her family on the Mississippi River. She enjoyed baking bread, cinnamon rolls, pies and cookies, often for the children in the neighborhood. She was renowned for her homemade apple pie. For several years, she enjoyed working in ceramics, hand painting many vases, nativity sets, pitchers, and bowls. She was an avid gardener raising vegetables and flowers and spending time canning and making jellies.

Helen was beloved by her family, friends, and neighbors. She was known as ''Grandma'' by many children and young adults and welcomed all who came to her home. She was a nurturing, loving, and generous person who will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Thursday, March 29, 2012 in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Rev. Joel Aldrich will officiate. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel. Burial will be in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery at 12:30 p.m. Thursday. Memorials may be made to Calvary Assembly of God or Galesburg Rescue Mission.
