|John Daugherty, Jr., 80 of Knoxville, Ill. died 12:25 p.m. Saturday, March 24, 2012 at Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
He was born August 15, 1931 in Knoxville to John Sr. and Elsie H. Noonan Daugherty.
He is survived by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a special friend Elizabeth Pitts and five brothers.
John was a school teacher for Knoxville High School for 30 years and retired in 1989. He received the Teacher of the Year Award in 1989. The "Doc Award," an award given for high academic and athletic achievements at Knoxville High School was created in his name. He graduated from Knoxville High School in 1950. He received his Masters degree from Western Illinois University, Macomb Ill. and his PhD. in education from University of Sarasota, Sarasota, Fla. He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving during the Korean War. He was the city clerk for Knoxville from 1989 to 1999. He was a member of Gamma Theta Upsilon and Delta Sigma Phi fraternities. He was a member of the National, Illinois and Knox Education Associations. He was a member of the Knoxville Christian Church and Knoxville American Legion Post # 749. John enjoyed antiques, golfing, fishing and traveling.
Cremation will be accorded with a private family graveside service at Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens as per John's request. Rev. David Shreeves will officiate. A celebration of life open house will be 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 4, 2012 at Knoxville Christian Church.
