Van Fleet, William D.
William D. Van Fleet, 90, of Galesburg, Ill. died at 1:22 p.m. Thursday, March 1, 2012 in Seminary Manor.

William was born August 15, 1921 in Tennessee, Ill., the son of Otis and Beulah King Van Fleet. He married Eula May Downey on June 7, 1940 in Palmyra, Mo. She preceded him in death on June 7, 2005.

He is survived by a son, Wendell (and Bonnie) Van Fleet of Galesburg; three grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Harold (and Ina) Van Fleet of Plymouth, Ill. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Mary Jo, two sisters and two brothers.

William was in the United Sates Army from 1941 to 1945, serving during World War II with Pattons 3rd Army in Normandy. Upon returning from the war, William worked as a laborer for Butler Manufacturing for 42 years.

He was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church. He was active in the Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post #285.

Graveside service will be 1:30 p.m. Monday, March 5, 2012 in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens. Rev. Norman Mendell will officiate. Military rites will be provided by Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be made to the family in care of Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Home. Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.
