Atkins, Margaret L.
Margaret L. Atkins, age 84 of Abingdon, died at 12:45 am Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at the Rosewood Care Center in Galesburg.

She was born November 7, 1928 near Atkinson, Illinois, the daughter of Harold and Mary (Sears) Clark. She married Marvin O. Atkins on November 20, 1951 in Abingdon. He preceded her in death on April 1, 1992. She was also preceded in death by her parents.
Margaret is survived by a son, William (and Delores) Atkins of Pekin; a daughter, Bonnie (and Mike) Anderson of Abingdon; two brothers, Richard (and Dorothy A.) Clark of Bishop Hill, and Gordon (and Barbara) Clark of Geneseo; a sister, Roberta Mittan of Utica, Nebraska.

She attended a rural school nicknamed "Frog Pond" near Cambridge. She graduated from Geneseo High School in 1946 and later from Western Illinois University in 1950, majoring in Physical Education.

She was a teacher in Abingdon District #217 for 32 years, retiring in 1990. During that time, she was instrumental in helping to start girls' interscholastic athletic programs in the 1970's. She coached the Abingdon High School Bowling Team and the team won three IHSA State Championships during her tenure. She received the award of "Coach of State Champions" by the Illinois Coaches Association in the school year of 1978-1979. Many will also remember her as their cheerleading coach for many years. After retiring from teaching, she was a volunteer at Galesburg Cottage Hospital. She also became the official scorekeeper at AHS volleyball and basketball games for six years. In 1999, she was nominated and was awarded her place on the Wall of Fame at Abingdon High School.
She was a member of the following organizations, Order of Eastern Star, the Delphian Club, and the Indian Point Club. She was also a charter member of the Abingdon Pottery Collectors Club. She was member of the Abingdon United Methodist Church and many groups within the church.

As Margaret requested, cremation will be accorded. A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 am Monday, March 25, 2013 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel. Mr. Mark McCurry will officiate. Visitation will be held from 10:00 am to 11:00 am Monday at the chapel. Private burial of her ashes will be in the Abingdon Cemetery.
