Bennett, T. Joe
T. Joe Bennett, age 78 of Abingdon, died at 8:40 am Thursday, March 21, 2013 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born October 17, 1934, in Pocahontas, Arkansas, the son of Preston and Dovie (Duke) Bennett. He married Joann Ward on April 29, 1955 in Pocahontas.

Joe is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Joann; one daughter, Robin A. (and Ray) Hutson of Abingdon; one son, Joey M. (and Jackie) Bennett of Abingdon; four grandchildren, Brenda Doud, Heather Hutson, Thomas Schisler and David Schisler; three great-grandchildren, Ashley Dutton, Nicole Doud and Connor Patch; one brother, Charles (and Ann) Bennett of Heber Springs, Arkansas; one sister, Geraldine (and Walter) Bibbs of Springfield, Missouri: and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and four sisters.

He grew up in Pocahontas. He served in the Army for two years and was stationed in Baumholder, Germany. He and Joann later moved to Abingdon in 1957. He worked at Briggs Manufacturing in Abingdon as a caster for 44 years, retiring in 1998.

He was a founding member of the First General Baptist Church in Abingdon, where he served as Trustee, Deacon and Sunday School Superintendent. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and his greatest times were spent time with his family.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Tuesday, March 26, 2013 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel. His son-in-law, Rev. Ray Hutson and his brother, Rev. Charles Bennett will officiate. Burial will follow in the Abingdon Cemetery, where military rites will be conducted by the Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post #381. Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm Monday at the chapel.
