|Beverly Jean (Burkhalter) Mercer, 84, of Galesburg, died early Saturday morning, April 10, 2010 in Galesburg Cottage Hospital of a sudden illness.
She was born September 2, 1925 in Galesburg to Lester Harold and Ione Vivian (Young) Burkhalter. She grew up in Galesburg and graduated from Galesburg High School.
While working as a caregiver at the Mayo General Hospital in Galesburg during World War II, she met and married Jack McClinsey. He died at age 37. She later married Manford J. Mercer, he is also deceased. She had two children, Andrew Logan McClinsey and Michelle Anna Mercer, both of Galesburg. Also surviving are two sisters, A. Joan Foster of Galesburg and Helen Jane (and LeRoy) Melton of Abingdon, Ill. She was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Lee Burkhalter.
She and her husband Jack lived in Chicago for several years before returning to Galesburg. She worked for several years at the Ida Ann Dress Shop. She worked many years at Fred Schubach's Clothing Store. After his closing, she worked at MiMi's Clothing Store until she retired.
In her retirement, she loved caring for her home, yard, and a small summer garden. Having lived in the same house for 48 years, she knew all her neighbors well. She did love the retail business and had a lot of female clients who respected her taste in clothes, following her to whatever shop she worked at.
She will be missed by her children, family, and friends. She is at peace now.
Cremation will be accorded. Private family graveside service will be Friday in Memorial Park Cemetery. There will be no visitation.
