Bankes, Sheryl L.
Sheryl L. Bankes, 46, 711 Johnston St., Galesburg, died at 6:25 p.m. Wednesday, April 21, 2010 in Marigold Health Care Center.

She was born June 29, 1963 in Macomb, Ill., the daughter of Conrad and Connie Watson Deener. She married Charles L. "Chuck" Bankes on March 30, 1985 in Macomb.

She is survived by her husband, Chuck, two daughters, Melissa Bankes and Chelsea Bankes, both of Galesburg, her parents, Conrad and Connie Deener of Macomb, a sister, Carol (and Geoff) Walter of Olathe, Kan, and grandparents, John and Hazel Watson of Macomb. Sheryl is also survived by her in laws, Jess and Peg Elmore of Abingdon, Ill., a step daughter, Rhiannon Bankes Malone of Dacula, Ga., and a step granddaughter.

Sheryl worked as a teacher's aide for Galesburg School District 205, mainly at Lincoln School for seven years. She then taught at Costa Catholic School and most recently was a Title teacher at Nielson School. She graduated from Pekin (Ill.) High School in 1981, earned her associate's degree from Scott Community College in 1983 and earned her bachelor's degree from Monmouth College in 2006.

Sheryl was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Galesburg, where she helped start the MOPS program and was involved with other activities, including the ALPHA program.

Sheryl especially enjoyed her times with friends and fellow teachers with their Dinner Group, Book Club, and Hearts at Home. She was always involved with various school organizations, including Band Boosters and PTO activities.

Cremation will be accorded. Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Monday, April 26, 2010 in First Presbyterian Church. Rev. David Parker will officiate. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Private family inurnment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
