Smith, Joanne
Joanne Smith, 71, Galesburg, passed away on Friday April 30, 2010 at 3:42 a.m. at her home in the WoodRidge Supportive Living facility after battling cancer for the past year.

Joanne was born August 19, 1938 in Galesburg to Perry and Nancy Elizabeth Bunch Jacobs. She married Robert Smith on July 7, 1957 in Galesburg.

Surviving Joanne are her husband, Robert, of almost 53 years who was her best friend; one daughter, Lori (Rick) Sundberg of Galesburg, and one son, Mark (Joetta) Smith of Monmouth, Ill.. She also has two grandchildren surviving her who were the light of her life; Cameron and Carissa Smith of Monmouth. She is also survived by two grown step children, Nicole (Ben Hawkinson) and Eric (Tabitha Hillier) Sundberg and their children, Annelise, Alaina, and Jonah Hawkinson, and Sedrick and Saige Washington. She is survived by two sisters, Colleen (Larry) Mackey of Pennsylvania and Barbara (Don) Helms of Galesburg, one brother, Richard (Barbara) Jacobs of Missouri, two step brothers and several cousins, nieces and nephews. Joanne had special friends, Dean and Sandy Stegall who have been friends for over 45 years. Joanne was preceded in death by a brother, Harold Dean Jacobs, her mother when she was still a teenager and then much later by her father. Joanne mourned the early death of her mother her entire adult life.

Joanne attended schools in Alexis and Galesburg. She was a homemaker for many years while her children were young, but in later years waitressed at the Grand View and Wags restaurants and then worked for several years at Karmel Corn at the Sandburg mall.

Joanne enjoyed spending time with her husband, shopping, going out to eat and to movies, and delighted in all of the sports and activities of her children and in later years, her grandchildren. She took pride in their accomplishments and enjoyed seeing them succeed in whatever sports or activities in which they participated. She was supportive of whatever her children or grandchildren were involved in and was almost always present for their events. Joanne was a member of First Baptist Church for almost 50 years. Joanne had a love for animals that was unsurpassed and she enjoyed the comfort of a pet almost her entire life. She passed her love of animals on to both of her children and to her grandchildren.

A celebration of Joanne's life will be held Tuesday, May 4, 2010 at 1:30 p.m. at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel with Pastor Dan Siems of First Baptist Church officiating. Graveside services will follow at Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens. At Joanne's request, there will not be a visitation.
