Varner, Gerald "Jake"
Gerald "Jake" Varner, age 72, of Knoxville, Illinois died at 3:45 P.M. on Thursday, April 29, 2010 at the OSF St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg, Illinois in the presence of his Lord and many family and friends.

He was born on July 7, 1937 in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of John Henry and Zelma May Port Varner. He married Nancy J. Miller on May 16, 1958 in Rock Island, Illinois.

She survives of Knoxville, Illinois.

Daughter: Lorri Walker of Knoxville, Illinois

Son: Andy (Elizabeth) Varner of Galesburg, Illinois

Son-In-Law: Jim Morgan of Knoxville, Illinois

Grandchildren: Chris Walker, Becky Walker, Kathleen Varner, Michael Varner, Bridget Morgan and Ashley Morgan

Brother: Gene (Jean) Nelson of Long Beach California, John Varner of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and Elmer Varner of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

Sister: Eunice (Chuck) Crossgrove of Constantine, Michigan, Ellen Fisher of Reno, Nevada, Paula Branscom of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and Vicki Elukhanyeni of Rock Island, Illinois

Sisters-In-Law: Phyllis Varner of Three Rivers, Michigan and Patricia (Dwayne) Blaser of Coal Valley, Illinois

Preceded in death by his parents; one daughter: Patty Varner Morgan; one sister and two brothers

He spent his younger years in Iowa, Michigan and Coal Valley, Illinois. He served in the United States Air Force from August 13, 1954 until February 3, 1958 and received the National Defense and Good Conduct Medals. He then returned to Coal Valley, Illinois. Later he moved to Gilson, Illinois where he purchased land and turned it into an outdoor haven. He founded and owned JB & D Siding for 23 years until he sold the company to the present owners. He was involved in many ventures throughout his life. He owned and raced harness horses. In his retirement, he enjoyed the challenge of remodeling homes. Jake was an avid fisherman and shared this sport with many friends and family throughout his years. He also enjoyed spending time playing cards with friends and was known to share many colorful tales of his life growing up. He attended Community Bible Church in Knoxville, Illinois and mostly enjoyed time spent with his family. Jake leaves behind many dear friends.

Funeral Services will be held on Monday, May 3, 2010 at 11:00 A.M. at the Community Bible Church in Knoxville, Illinois. Rev. Jim Reynolds officiating. Visitation will be held on Sunday, May 2, 2010 from 4:00 until 6:00 P.M. at the Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Homes and Crematory in Knoxville, Illinois. Burial in Knoxville Cemetery in Knoxville, Illinois.
