Nelson, Mary Gertrude
Mary Gertrude Anderson Nelson, 93, of Galesburg, died at 4:16 p.m. Saturday, April 2, 2011 in OSF St. Mary Medical Center.

She was born June 28, 1917 in Monmouth, Ill., the daughter of J. Godfrey and Gerda Fallman Anderson. She married C. Everett Nelson on August 10, 1940 in Monmouth.

She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Everett; a son, Thomas (and Peg) Nelson of Galesburg; two grandsons, David and Matthew Ahlswede; a granddog, Bing; many nieces and nephews, including Eugene Dahlgren of California and Gerald Leaf of Kansas; many great nieces and nephews; and great great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Cara Nelson Ahlswede; and two sisters, Katharine Perry and Helen Lytle.

Mary worked as a secretary for the Chicago Motor Club and for the Streator Elementary Schools. She and Everett were co-owners of Bowman Shoes in Streator, Ill. She was raised in Monmouth and graduated from high school there in 1934. She lived in Boone, Iowa for a time, in Streator for 50 years, and in Galesburg for the past 10 years.

While living in Streator, she was a member of St. Pauls Evangelical Lutheran Church and was currently a member of First Lutheran Church in Galesburg. Mary was an avid Bridge player, and enjoyed traveling and needlework.

Visitation will be 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday April 6, 2011 in First Lutheran Church, followed by a funeral service at 1 p.m. Rev. Paul Johnson will officiate. Burial will be in Warren County Memorial Park Cemetery in Monmouth. Memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church in Galesburg or St. Pauls Evangelical Lutheran Church in Streator. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.
