|M. Roger Downes, 86, of Abingdon, IL, died at 6:55 P.M., Tues. April 5, 2011, at the Heartland Health Care Center, Galesburg, IL.
Roger was born January 17, 1925, in Monmouth, Illinois, the son of Maurice and Florence (Chewning) Downes. He was raised and educated in the Roseville, IL area, graduating from Roseville High School in 1943.
Roger married Grace M. Ketchum at the Berwick Baptist Church on September 9, 1945, and she died October 14, 1992.
Roger worked for Western Stoneware and the M & St.L Railroad. He later farmed in Henderson County for 22 years before retiring in 1973. In 1974 Roger and Grace moved to Abingdon where Roger worked for Briggs Industries until he retired in 1990.
Roger enjoyed going for long scenic car rides, family gatherings, gardening and traveling to new destinations. He was a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan. He also enjoyed going to the Par-a-dice Riverboat to play the penny slots.
He was a member of the Rozetta Baptist Church, I.O.O.F Lodge #61 in Monmouth, Rebekah Lodge #22 in Monmouth, Hiawatha Encampment #87 in Monmouth, the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge and the Moose Legion.
Surviving are his 3 daughters, Marie Dilts, Jane (Jerry) Hummell, and Bonnie C. Downes all of Burlington, IA; 2 grandchildren, Jason Hummell of Burlington, IA, and Stephanie (Mike) McCammon of Silvis, IL; 4 great-grandchildren, Jazmine Crowe, Jordan Crowe and Jamie McCammon, all of Silvis, and Evan Nichols of Pana, IL; 1 brother, Finley Downes of Strongsville, OH; 1 sister, Betty Wood of Watertown, WI; 1 sister-in-law, Dorothy Casteel of Monmouth; nieces and nephews.
His parents, wife, and one daughter, Elaine Downes, preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Monday, April 11, 2011, at Hoover-Hall Memorial Chapel, Monmouth. Burial will be Monmouth Cemetery. Friends may call after Noon on Sunday, April 10, 2011, at Hoover-Hall Memorial Chapel, Monmouth, where his family will be present from 2:00-4:00 P.M. There will be a Moose Lodge service at 4:00 P.M. Memorials may be given to Hospice Compassus.
