Elander, Dorcas M.
Dorcas M. Elander, 89, of Galesburg died at 8:25 pm Saturday, March 31, 2012 in Marigold Healthcare Center.

She was born April 8, 1922 in Swan Creek, Illinois the daughter of Lawrence S. and Agatha J. Trone Mitchell. She married John Elander on August 3, 1941 in Galesburg. He died during World War II on March 31, 1945.

She is survived by her son, James "Rick" Richard (Nancy) Elander of Galesburg; three sisters, Delia Carroll of Galesburg, Ill., Shirley Christianson of Buellton, Calif., and Ellen Wignall of Altona, Ill.; five grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a daughter, Frances Peterson on September 24, 2002 and three brothers, Jim, Charles and Everett Mitchell and three sisters, Anna Craig, Betty Severns and Reva Lytle.

She was a LPN at Cottage Hospital for 21 years, retiring in 1985. She was raised in Swan Creek area and moved to Galesburg in 1930. Dorcas graduated from Galesburg High School in 1940. She later graduated from the nursing program at Carl Sandburg College in 1975. She was a very active member of the Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Galesburg. She helped with several church activities, was a member of the Methodists Women's Group and taught Sunday school.

Graveside services are scheduled for 10:00 am Thursday, April 5, 2012 in Memorial Park Cemetery. Rev. Tom Ek will officiate. Visitation will be 5:00-7:00 pm Wednesday, April 4, 2012 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Unit at Marigold Health Care Center or to the charity of the donors choice. Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.
