|Shirley J. Carter, 80, of Galesburg, died at 3:43 a.m. Tuesday, April 24, 2012 in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
She was born July 18, 1931 in Galesburg the daughter of John and Bertha (Hicks) Sullivan. She married Earl R. Carter January 12, 1952. He preceded her in death October 30, 1987.
She is survived by a son, Steven D. (and Linda) Carter of Knoxville, Ill.; two daughters, Linda (and Mark) Burton of Orlando, Fla. and Lou Ann (and L.P.) Fox of Onalaska, Wis.; seven grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and special friend and companion, Bill Hinrichs of Galesburg. She was preceded in death by two sisters.
Shirley worked in the Knox County Treasurer's Office for 35 years, retiring March 31, 2003. She was a member and past president of the Ralph M. Noble American Legion Unit 285 Ladies Auxiliary and a Partner and past chapau of the 8/40 of Knox County Salon #215.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday, April 27, 2012 in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Rev. Leigh Nygard will officiate. Visitation will be 9:30 to 11 a.m. Friday at the chapel. Burial will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to American Legion Unit 285 Auxiliary Past President's Nurses Scholarship Fund or Hospice Compassus.
