|Mr. S. Eugene "Gene" Hopping, 79, of 1089 Maple Ave., Galesburg, IL, died at 6:45 PM Thursday, May 6, 2010 at OSF St. Mary Medical Center, Galesburg.
He was born on April 19, 1931 in Astoria, IL, to Ross and Lena Leota Forshee Hopping. He married Inelda Mae Myers on April 3, 1951 in Galesburg. She survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Rick (and Beth) Hopping of Gaffney, S.C. and Kenneth Hopping of Thornton, CO; two daughters, Monica (and Dennis) Westall and Genelda Hopping both of Galesburg and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister.
He served for six years in the Army during the Korean War. He achieved the rank of Sergeant and received the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal and two Bronze Service Stars. He was stationed at Camp Chaffe, AK, Fort Bliss, El Paso, TX, and Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.
He was a cement finisher at Galesburg Construction and Hopping Concrete for 30 years, retiring in 1988.
He was a member of the First Church of God in Galesburg. He also belonged to the AMVETS, the American Legion, the Masonic Lodges in Bushnell, Ill. and Abingdon, Ill., the Shrine and Scottish Rite and the Cement Finishers Local Union. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, bowling and road trips.
Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Tuesday, May 11, 2010 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel with Rev. Don Reynolds and Rev. Nathanial Hopping officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM Monday, May 10, 2010 at the Chapel. Burial will be in the Abingdon Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the Abingdon American Legion Post.
