|Richard "Dick" McVey, 85, of Delray Beach, FL. Formerly of Monmouth died 9:00 P.M. Friday, January 22, 2010 Boynton Beach, FL.
He was born May 11, 1924 in Monmouth, IL the son of Richard Wright and Margaret (Foster) McVey. He was raised and educated in Monmouth, graduating from Monmouth High School and attended Monmouth College.
Dick served with the United States Army Air Corps as a 1st. Lieutenant. He flew as a pilot for the B-26 Marin Marauders for 54 missions in France and Holland. On his second mission he was wounded and was awarded the Purple Heart.
Dick began working at the Model Clothing S. for Mr. Art Hamilton and Mrs. Art Neuman when he returned form the war and eventually became part owner at the time of Mr. Hamilton's death. Dick was the President of the Model Clothing Company in Monmouth from 1955-1994. He was elected to the board of Directors of the National Bank of Monmouth where he served for 26 years. He was a member and served as President of the Monmouth Chamber of Commerce. He also served as President of the Warren County Prime Beef Festival. He was a member of the Warren Achievement School Board of Directors when the organization was first being formed for children with developmental disabilities. He also served on the organizational committee for Community Memorial Hospital. He was a member of the Masons, Shriners, Monmouth American Legion, Monmouth VFW, Monmouth Flying Club and Rotary Clubs.
Survivors include his wife, Lorraine "Muff" McVey of Delray Beach, FL, his daughter, Sally McVey of Monmouth; step-children, Deborah DeForest of Galesburg, Barbara Powell of Tulare, CA, James Benbow of Iron Mountain, MI, Steve Benbow and Brian Benbow both of Galesburg; his brothers, Robert (Joan) McVey of Alexis and James (Eleanor) McVey of CA; nieces and nephews, Lynn (Steven) Sanders of Dallas, TX, Catherin McVey of San Diego, CA, Mark (Samantha) McVey of Dallas, TX, Jane (Wayne) Bosch of Chandler, AZ, Steve (Lynn) McVey, Mark (Julie) McVey, Cinda (Bruce) Burgland and Dana Papineau all of Monmouth.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Richard T. McVey and one daughter, Sue McVey Pitz and two infants at birth.
Memorial services will be 10:30 A.M. Sat. May 8, 2010 at Faith United Presbyterian Church, Monmouth with Rev. William Myers officiating. Burial will be in Warren County Memorial Park, Monmouth. Friends may call Saturday morning at the church where his family will be present from 9:30 A.M until the time of the services.
