Dewey was active in the Abingdon community. He served as a volunteer fireman for the Abingdon Fire Protection District for 26 years. He also volunteered as a little league baseball coach along with Jack Wherley, and they coached the Pirates team for several years as their boys were growing up. He also enjoyed camping and taking trips in their motor home. He loved his sons and daughters-in-law, and his family was his pride and joy.
