|John M. Chaney, 91, of Galesburg, died at 6:33 a.m. Friday, June 22, 2012 at home surrounded by his family.
He was born January 8, 1921 in Clarendon, Ark. the son of William and Eva Roberson Chaney. He married Opal R. Beary on October 5, 1941 in Black Rock, Ark.
He is survived by his wife of over 70 years, Opal; three children, Rose (and Ted) Olson, John (and Rosalie) Chaney, and Sam (and Susie) Chaney, all of Galesburg; eight grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, William and Benjamin.
John spent his younger years working two terms in the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps). He was also a veteran of the United States Army, serving during World War II in the Pacific Theatre. He worked for 28 years for Galesburg Construction Company as a cement mason until they sold. He then worked for numerous construction companies until he retired.
He was a member of First Baptist Church and was active with the youth group. He served on the Board of Deacons, Trustees, and education at the church. John loved to fish and spending time with his family.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 27, 2012 in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Dr. Robert Box and Rev. Daniel Siems will officiate. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel. Burial will be in East Linwood Cemetery. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice, First Baptist Church, Midwest Home Health Care, or Hospice Compassus.
