|Kathryn "Kay" Spitzig, age 64 of Cameron, died at 11:31 pm Thursday, June 20, 2013 in the emergency room at OSF St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg.
She was born on August 7, 1948 in Galesburg, the daughter of Willard and Juanita (Bennett) Smith. She married Bennie D. Spitzig on October 18, 1968 in Galesburg. He survives.
Kay is also survived by her son, Bill Spitzig of Eldridge, Iowa; two grandchildren, Christopher Spitzig and Brandi Spitzig, both of Eldridge, Iowa; two step-sons, Robert Spitzig of Galesburg and Richard Spitzig of Abingdon; five step-grandchildren, Eric Spitzig of Abingdon, Casey Spitzig of Galesburg, Michelle Spitzig of Galesburg, Wendi Spitzig of Decatur and Jamie Davidson of Peoria and their families; one brother, Jerry E. Smith of Chickasaw, Alabama; five sisters, Pat Campbell of Galesburg, Shirley Bailey of Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri, Barbara Carter of Galesburg, Lisa Wasowski of Ocala, Florida and Linda Crawford of Arcanum, Ohio; two step-brothers, Larry Owings of Kansas City, Missouri and George Owings of Galesburg; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Jimmy Smith, Bobby Joe Smith, and Ted Smith.
She graduated from Abingdon High School and later received her beautician's license after studying and training at a beauty school in Galesburg. She was a homemaker, a beautician and had also worked at a meat packing plant. She had attended the First Assembly of God Church in Abingdon. Her hobbies included making crafts, sewing, crocheting, oil painting, playing cards with neighbors and friends and going to the casinos. She loved to cook and decorate her Christmas tree.
As she requested, cremation was accorded. The family will celebrate her life by receiving friends from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm Friday, June 28, 2013 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel followed by a prayer service. A time of food and fellowship will be held at the Cameron Fire Department after the prayer service.
