Damitz, Donald W.
Donald W. "Don" Damitz, 85, of Galesburg, died at 11:40 a.m. Saturday, June 22, 2013 in the emergency room of Galesburg Cottage Hospital.

He was born January 3, 1928 in Greenbush Twp., Warren County, Ill. the son of Dorin and Edna Gillette Damitz. After his fathers death, he was raised by his mother and step father, James Franklin Miles. He married Maxine G. Harbac on April 5, 1952. She preceded him in death on August 26, 2010.

He is survived by two sons, Dennis G. (and Dianna) Higgins of Oquawka, Ill. and Darryl (and Jean) Damitz of Colona, Ill.; two daughters, Donna Damitz of Galesburg and Mary (and Nels) Christianson of Williamsfield, Ill.; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Bill; and a grandson, Billy.

Don was an auto mechanic, owning and operating Don's Auto Repair for several years. He retired in 1982. He was a member of Bethany Baptist Church.

Don served in the United States Navy during World War II.

Don was an avid collector and an immaculate dresser. In his younger years, he raced cars and rode motorcycles and horses. He enjoyed traveling.

Funeral will be 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 26, 2013 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Rev. John Carlson will officiate. Visitation will be 11:30 to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel. Burial will be in Olive-Holeman Cemetery in rural Avon. Memorials may be made to Bethany Baptist Church. Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.
