Wilson, Hilda E.
Hilda E. Wilson, 87, of 2726 180th St., Rt.1, Galesburg, died at 2:15 a.m. Sunday, July 11, 2010 at OSF St. Mary Medical Center, Galesburg.

She was born December 23, 1922 in Steeleville, Ill. to Fred L. and Hulda Schaack Meyer. She married Elmer L. Wilson September 15, 1944 in Bremen, Ill. He preceded her in death in 1991.

Surviving are two daughters, Jan H. (and Tim) Sward of Galesburg and Karen L. (and Gary A.) Gustafson of Conway, N.H., two brothers, Harold Meyer of Steeleville and Arthur Meyer of Waterloo, Ill., a sister, Evelyn Schwartzkopf of Baldwin, Ill., four grandchildren, Eric (and Jennifer) Sward, Craig (and Renee) Sward, Garrett Gustafson and Kate Gustafson and three great grandchildren, Alex, Alexis and Cameron.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her aunt, Emma Schaack, a brother, Raymond F. Meyer and a sister, Erna Ernsting.

Hilda graduated from Chester High School, Chester, Ill. She and her husband moved to Galesburg in 1951 and purchased one acre of land on Davis Street. A home which they built there was mortgaged in 1956 to gain capital to start their own business, a Spudnut donut shop. A second shop was opened in 1966 at 1722 N. Henderson St. Eventually, they opened five satellite shops in Monmouth, Aledo, Kewanee, Macomb and Burlington, Iowa. Hilda was a member of the Covenant Church, Galesburg and the Church Circle. She also served on the Diaconate Board, visited shut-ins, sorted and filed music, and organized and served funeral and retired teacher luncheons. She also planned and served Wednesday evening family fellowship.

Funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 14, 2010 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Rev. Thomas Ek will officiate. Visitation will be 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the chapel. Burial will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to the Covenant Church or Habitat for Humanity. Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.
